Scoggins and the Saints Rally Past FSC-J, 8-5

Gainesville, FL – Connor Castellano came through with a big two out, two run single in the seventh inning to rally the Santa Fe Saints back from a 5-3 deficit on Monday afternoon and Casey Scoggins completed the comeback with a two RBI single in the eighth to defeat Florida State College-Jacksonville 8-5. SF added an insurance run in the eighth on a passed ball.
Josh Larson picked up the win for Santa Fe (23-10, 8-4 MFC) with 3.1 shutout innings in relief of starter Kevin Martin. He allowed just one hit and struck out four. Martin lasted 5.2 innings and surrendered five earned runs with five strikeouts.
The Saints opened the scoring in the first with one run and added two more in the fifth on a squeeze bunt by Josh Stewart and a RBI single by Colby Lusignanto go ahead 3-0.
FSC-J exploded in the top of the sixth for five runs on four hits to take a 5-3 lead.
Two innings later Castellano pulled the Saints even with a two out, two RBI on the first pitch of his at bat to even the score at 5-5.
In the bottom of the eighth Blake Berger led off with a single, Josh Stewart was hit by a pitch and a balk by the FSC-J put runners on second and third with no outs. Scoggins then stepped to the plate and delivered a two RBI single to put the Saints back in the lead 7-5. An insurance run on a passed ball was the final run of the game.
Josh Larson shut down the Blue Wave in order to preserve the victory.
Scoggins was perfect at the plate on the day, finishing 4-for-4 with two RBI and three runs scored. Stewart was 2-for-3 with three runs and a RBI and Castellano finished 1-for-4 with two RBI.
The Saints travel to Palatka on Wednesday, April 3 for the first game of a three game series against St. John's River State College at 6:00 PM.
