Jacksonville, FL – The Santa Fe Saints (13-10, 2-0 MFC) came out like a team on a mission Tuesday afternoon in their Mid-Florida Conference openers, sweeping past Florida State College-Jacksonville (17-15, 0-2 MFC) in convincing fashion. SF routed the Blue Wave in game one, ending the game in a mercy rule after just five innings, 9-0. Game two was closer but timely hitting and solid pitching led the Saints to a 2-1 win.
"The team played very well together today and stayed focused every pitch," said SF coach Chris Ahern.
Santa Fe sophomore Karla Claudio was at the top of her game, pitching a two hitter in game one to earn the shutout victory and she also finished off game two with a save, preserving the win for Amber Maxey.
Rachel Hoeft led a stellar offensive output in game one, finishing 3-for-4 with three RBI. Aileen Fiallo was also 3-for-4 with a RBI, Claudio was 2-for-3 with two runs and a homerun and Galis Lozada finished 1-for-2 with a run scored.
In game two Maxey pitched another gem for the Saints, allowing just one run. Geena Captini provided all the offense, knocking in both Saint runs and Claudio pitched a scoreless seventh inning to seal the victory.
Santa Fe pounded out 15 hits in the 12 innings and held the Blue Wave to just seven.
