SF BASEBALL - 3/1/2013
Gainesville, FL – Aside from two unearned runs in the first inning, Santa Fe freshman pitcher Kevin Martin (3-0) twirled a gem Friday afternoon against East Georgia State College (7-8), striking out 13 Bobcats to lead Santa Fe (12-6) to a 4-2 win. Reliever Josh Larson was just as good, throwing three shutout innings to pick up his first save of the season.
"Kevin was fantastic today," said SF Coach Johnny Wiggs. "He really kept us in the game and gave us a chance to win."
The Santa Fe offense struggled to get going and finally got on the board the hard way in the fourth when outfielder Andrew Fears was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. The Saints collected another run in the fifth to tie the score on a bases loaded walk and took the lead in the sixth on a safety squeeze by Casey Scoggins.
Two innings later in the bottom of the eighth Scoggins scored an insurance run on an errant throw by the EGSC catcher.
Larson pitched a perfect ninth to close out the game.
Jamal Martin was the lone SF batter with multiple hits, finishing 2-for-2 with a double and a run scored.
The Saints continue on Saturday against East Georgia with a double header at 12:30 PM. The Santa Fe Athletics Hall of Fame induction ceremony will precede the game at 11:00 AM at the baseball facility.
