SF MEN'S BASKETBALL - 2/20/2013
Gainesville, FL – It took three tries but the Florida State College-Jacksonville Blue Wave finally got the best of Santa Fe College (18-11, 4-4 MFC) on Wednesday afternoon, upsetting the Saints 71-67 in Gainesville. SF won the previous two match-ups this season but couldn't overcome a 20 point first half from Aaron Harrison to pull out a third straight win over the Blue Wave.
"Harrison was very good tonight, we didn't have an answer for him in the first half," said SF Coach Chris Mowry. "FSC-J played well and outworked us for a lot of the game. We clearly weren't ready to play."
The Blue Wave (12-15, 4-4 MFC) jumped out to an early 9-0 lead and stretched it to 20-4 just four and a half minutes into the game. The Saints fought back over the next 10 minutes with a 20-8 run to cut the margin to 28-24. FSC-J closed with a jumper by Aaron Harrison and two free throws by David Jerome for a 32-25 halftime lead.
FSC-J continued to control the action in the second half and took a game high 59-44 lead with eight minutes to go. The Saints didn't give in and got as close as three with 45 seconds remaining but could get no closer.
Matt Jackson did what he could to keep the Saints in in, nailing 7-of-8 shots, including 5-for-5 from the three point line in route to a season high 21 points. The nation's leading scorer Bobby Hunter had 19 after only 3 in the first half and Roody Saint-Germain had 14.
"Matt had a tremendous game tonight," said Mowry. "He picked us up in the second half and was making open and contested shots. Roody also had a very good game."
The Saints last regular season game is on Saturday, February 23 at Daytona State College at 4:00 PM. Should SF win or FSC-J lose to Central Florida Saturday the Saints will clinch second place and host the Mid-Florida Conference tournament championship game on Tuesday, February 26 at 7:00 PM. Should Santa Fe lose and FSC-J win, the Saints would host Daytona State College on Monday, February 25 at 7:00 PM.
