Baseball Splits Double Header with St. Petersburg College

Gainesville, FL – Santa Fe College took game one of a double head against St. Petersburg College Saturday afternoon with a seventh inning rally, topping the Titans 7-5. SPC answered in game two, splitting the twin bill with a 2-0 shutout.
Derek Vail (1-1) picked up the win with 2.1 scoreless innings in relief of starter Kevin Martin. Caleb Denmark earned the save by tossing a scoreless seventh.
The FCSAA #2 Saints (10-4) got on the board first in game one with a five run second inning. Jonathan Camp and Andrew Fears both singled with one out and Josh Stewart drew a two out walk. With two outs and the bases loaded, Jamal Martin delivered a two RBI single. Leadoff man Casey Scoggins followed with a RBI single, Martin scored on a passed ball by the catcher and Jared Mederos capped the inning with a double to score Scoggins.
St. Pete (7-8) rallied for one in the third and four in the fourth, chasing starter Kevin Martin.
In the seventh Colby Lusignan played the hero, singling with two outs and two strikes to plate two runs. Denmark cleaned up in the seventh for his first save.
Scoggins finished game one 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a RBI, Colby Lusignan was 1-for-3 with two RBI and Jamal Martin went 1-for-3 with two RBI.
Game two was a pitching duel dominated by SPC starter Jordan Taylor. Taylor threw six scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and struck out four. Kevin Kelleher pitched a perfect ninth for the save.
Santa Fe starter Clayton Wagner was sharp as well, allowing just two runs on four hits in six innings. Both Titan runs came in the first inning.
Evan Leyva and Caleb Denmark were the lone Saints with hits.
SF returns home Monday, February 18 to face off against Hillsborough CC at 3:00 PM.
