Jacksonville, FL – The Santa Fe Saints used a strong defensive effort and a strong offensive night from the nation's leading scorer Bobby Hunter and guard Roody Saint-Germain to power their way past Florida State College-Jacksonville. Hunter (25.7 ppg) had a game high 29 points and Saint-Germain pitched in 24 in just 21 minutes of play.
"This was a good win on the road for our guys," said SF Coach Chris Mowry. "I thought both teams battled hard all game and we did enough to come out on top."
The Saints (14-12, 2-3 MFC) led by as many as 13 in the first half but a late run by FSC-J (10-14, 2-3 MFC) cut the margin to 30-25 at halftime.
"FSC-J really battled and out worked us the last five or so minutes of the first half," said Mowry. "In the locker room we talked about limiting their second chance opportunities and getting more aggressive offensively. We were able to do both with a lot of success and that's a big reason we pulled away."
Santa Fe clamped down even more on the defensive end over the final 20 minutes and held the Blue Wave to just six offensive rebounds in the second half. Takija Knight, Jordan Banks and Andrea Robinson cleaned up the boards and limited FSC-J to just one attempt on most possessions, securing the 16 point win.
Along with combining for 51 of the Saints 65 points, both Hunter and Saint-Germain were each 13-for-15 from the free throw line with Santa Fe outscoring the Blue Wave from the charity stripe 26-2. Hunter leads the nation in free throws made (215) and now holds the Santa Fe record for attempts in a season with 282 and is just 14 more makes away from breaking George Gilmores 23 year old record of 228 made in a single season.
"Bobby and Roody did a nice job tonight attacking the hoop and then knocking down their free throws," said Mowry. "The rest of our guys may not have scored a ton of points but their collective effort on the glass and on defense really gave us the edge we needed."
The Saints return home on Saturday, February 9 to battle MFC foe Daytona State College at 2:00 PM. The game can be watched live on www.psblive.com.
