SF WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

Daytona, FL – The Santa Fe Saints traveled to Daytona State on Saturday afternoon needing a Mid-Florida Conference win and pulled out a close victory over the Falcons 53-52.  Paulina Zaveckaite hit a game winning layup with less than 20 second to put the Saints (15-9, 3-3 MFC) up 53-52 and Monique Bunk stole the ball on the ensuing possession to secure the win.

Abigail Asoro nearly played the hero for Daytona once again, hitting a fade away jumper with 25 seconds to go to give DSC a 52-51 lead.  On January 9 in Gainesville Asoro hit a three pointer at the buzzer to send the game to overtime against SF and scored nearly every point in the overtime period to lead the Falcons to a win.

"I was really proud of our defensive effort today," said SF Coach Chanda Stebbins.  "We struggled a bit offensively but made up for it by getting after it at the other end of the court.  Those are the types of things you have to do to beat quality teams on the road.  The shots aren't always going to fall, but the effort can always be there on defense."

Tiara Thompson led the Santa Fe offense, scoring 15 points, Jaquasha Sesler had 12 points to go with five rebounds and three steals, Lonna Turner had 10 points and four rebounds and the nation's leading rebounder Paulina Zaveckaite had four points, including the game winner, and 10 rebounds.

The Saints travel to Ocala on Wednesday, January 30 for a game against College of Central Florida at 6:00 PM.
