Rev. Dr. Joan Brown Campbell Speaks on the Charter for Compassion
January 17, 2013
I would like to invite you to participate in a signature event in keeping with the practices and philosophy of our college. Beginning at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 18 in our Fine Arts Hall, Rev. Dr. Joan Brown Campbell, a world-renowned peace activist, will speak on the Charter for Compassion, a cooperative effort to restore compassionatethinking and action to the center of religious, moral and political life. Rev. Dr. Campbell is a co-creator of the Charter for Compassion, which I will publicly sign on behalf of SF Friday evening. More than 150 organizations have affiliated with the Charter forCompassion, including September 11th Families for Peaceful Tomorrows, which was formed by citizens who lost family members in the 9/11 attacks and support nonviolent actions in the pursuit of justice.
Rev. Dr. Campbell is the director of the Department of Religion at Chautauqua Institution in New York. She served as the first woman director of the U.S. office of the World Council of Churches. Archbishop Desmond Tutu praised her as "a woman of courage andcompassion" and said "her voice helped to bring an end to the evil of apartheid."
Please join me for this important event.
