SF MEN'S BASKETBALL – 11/14/2012
Gainesville, FL – Overmatched Southwest Academy gave a valiant effort against FCSAA #5 Santa Fe on Wednesday evening, hanging around for the first 30 minutes before the Saints finally turned it on and pulled away down the stretch for the 90-62 win.
SF (4-0) built a 19 point lead at the seven minute mark of the first half but Southwest clawed back, cutting the lead to 40-32 with 2:27 left. Santa Fe closed on a 4-0 run to take a 44-32 margin into the locker room.
"I was disappointed with our focus tonight," said SF Coach Chris Mowry. "We were very poor on both ends of the floor in the first half and played with no emotion. This was a significant step backwards after our win against Tallahassee. We have a long way to go to be the team we want to be."
The scoring was back and forth over the first ten minutes of the second period and a jumper by Southwest's Corey James made the score 67-53 Saints with 9:20 remaining. Santa Fe turned it on from there, outscoring SW 23-9 over the final nine minutes for the 28 point win.
"I give a lot of credit to Southwest for hanging in there," said Mowry. "They stayed with us most of the game but just ran out of gas there at the end with only seven players and we were able to pull away. These are the types of games that we as a team have to take advantage of and use to get better. We did not do that tonight."
Bobby Hunter led all scorers with 22 points, Takija Knight scored 12 and pulled down six boards, Roody St. Germain had 12, Chad Milliken finished with 12 points and Jordan Banks added 10. Andrea Robinson led all rebounders with 11.
The Saints will take a few days off before returning to the court against Polk State College at home on Tuesday, November 20 at 7:00 PM.
"We have six days to work hard in practice and prepare for a very good Polk State team," said Mowry. "They are very talented and will give us everything we can handle."
