Gainesville, FL – Santa Fe sophomore guard Bobby Hunter put on a show Friday night against Tallahassee CC, scoring 32 points including the last 14 points and the game winning three pointer with eight seconds left to give FCSAA #10 SF an 86-85 victory over #5 Tallahassee CC.
"This was a very exciting win for our team," said SF coach Chris Mowry. "It was really a game of runs where one team clearly out played the other over long stretches. Bobby stepped up at the end and our defense was able to get a stop when we needed it."
Tallahassee (1-2) took their first lead of the second half with 1:47 remaining and a layup by Trevor McDade put the Eagles ahead by two with 16 seconds left in the game. SF ran a play for Hunter who crossed his defender over, stepped back and drilled a fade away three pointer with 9.8 seconds on the clock. The Saints (3-0) defense held up and a shot that appeared to give TCC the victory at the buzzer was waived off due to the rule that a play started with less than 0.5 seconds left must be tipped in in order to count. The Eagle player caught the inbounds pass and hit the baseline jumper but it was immediately waived off by the officials, giving SF the win.
"We ran the last play through Bobby and he was forced to create his own shot," said Mowry. "It was a big time play."
The game was back and forth through the first 17 minutes of the game before a 9-0 run gave the Saints a 49-40 lead at the half time break. Chad Milliken scored 11 in the first half and Hunter had 12 in just seven minutes of action.
"We didn't defend very well over the first 10 minutes," said Mowry. "We switched it up to a zone and were able to slow them down a little bit and change the pace of the game."
Santa Fe continued the momentum in the second period, building a 67-48 point advantage just five minutes in.
The Eagles didn't give in and chipped away at the lead, cutting it to 76-75 on a put back layup by Bernard Kline at the 5:00 minute mark. McDade eventually gave Tallahassee the lead with just seconds to go, but Hunter's heroics would spoil the TCC comeback.
"In the second half TCC did a good job attacking our zone and scored some easy baskets off some of our bad offensive possessions," Mowry said. "We took too many poor shots and Tallahassee really took advantage. Our guys stuck with it and Bobby came up big there at the end."
Hunter led all scorers with 32 points and also had four assists. He was just 5-of-13 from the field but made 19-of-22 from the free throw line. Chad Milliken added 20 points, including six three pointers and Andrea Robinson scored 15 points and pulled down eight rebounds.
"Chad shot the ball very well and gave us 32 solid minutes," said Mowry. "Andrea was outsized but worked hard down low and really held his own. We had contributions from everyone tonight and earned a great team win."
The Saints return to action Wednesday, November 14 against Southwest Academy at 7:00 PM.
