SF MEN'S BASKETBALL
Gainesville, FL – The Santa Fe Saints (1-0) had no trouble on opening night of the 2012-13 basketball season, hammering St. Thomas JV 134-67 in the SF Tip-off Classic behind 31 points from transfer guard Bobby Hunter.
"This was a good start for our guys," said SF Coach Chris Mowry. "St. Thomas plays a different style than we are used to seeing. They took 48 threes and pressured full court all game, forcing us out of our half court offense."
The game was never in question as SF built a 58-24 halftime lead, making 18-of-35 baskets while holding STU to just 9-of-35 from the field.
The Saints poured it on in the second half, piling up 76 points over the final 20 minutes on 27-of-41 shooting. SF shot 59% from the field, hitting 45-of-76 shots and outrebounded St. Thomas 64-31.
Santa Fe finished just two free throws short of a school record, making 36-of-50.
Six Saints finished in double figures. Bobby Hunter led the winning effort with 31 points and five steals, Deonte Moore had 23 points and eight rebounds, Chad Milliken finished with 19 points, Roody St. Germain had 12 points, Pat Kearney scored 11 to go with 13 rebounds and Bruno Bogut had 11 points and 11 rebounds.
"Bobby shot the ball very well and as a team we did a great job from the free throw line," said Mowry. "We will go get some rest tonight and come back to tomorrow to play a tough Rise Academy team."
The Saints battle Rise Academy on Friday, November 2 at 6:00 PM in the final game of the SF Tip-off Classic.
