Gainesville, FL – Palm Beach State College (0-1) may be ranked higher in the FCSAA State poll, but on Thursday night at the Santa Fe Tip-off Classic the #8 Saints (1-0) proved to be the better team. Freshman Monique Bunk led the offensive assault, putting up 13 points to go with eight assists in the convincing 97-55 rout.
"This is a great way to start off the year," said SF Coach Chanda Stebbins. "I'm very excited about the production we received from so many different players. This was truly a total team effort."
The #9 Panthers finished 25-2 a year ago but were no match for SF on this night. The Saints outrebounded PBSC 59-37 and held the Panthers to just 23% shooting from the field.
"I was proud of our post presence tonight," said Stebbins. "We really did a nice job on the boards and limited their second chance opportunities."
Santa Fe jumped out to an early double digit lead just six minutes into the game and never looked back. Sophomore Lydia Cuff put the finishing touches on the first half, finishing a layup to put SF ahead 46-26 at the break.
SF picked up in the second half where they left off, pushing the margin to 62-32 on a Kaitlynn Pacholke jumper at the 15:03 mark. One minute later Monique Bunk hit a short jumper and Shaquita Snow made runners in the lane on back to back possessions to push the lead out to 68-33.
Sophomore Lonna Tuner made the lead 40 with a free throw at 7:42. The Saints maintained their lead the rest of the way and Raquitta Gooden capped the win with back to back steals and layups for the final 97-55 margin.
Bunk finished the game with 13 points, eight assists and three steals, Tiara Thompson scored 14 to go with eight rebounds, Gooden scored 12 and pulled down five board, Lydia Cuff had eight points and eight rebounds and Paulina Zaveckaite had nine points and 11 rebounds.
The Saints continue in the SF Tip-off Classic on Friday, November 2 against Miami Dade College at 4:00 PM.
