Santa Fe College To Host Last Congressional Candidates' Forum Oct. 29

October 29, 2012

Voters will have an opportunity to meet, listen to and question the candidates for U.S. Congress District 3 at a Candidates Forum on the Santa Fe College campus Monday, Oct. 29, from 3:30 until 4:30 p.m. in the Fine Arts Hall. This is one of the last events featuring all three candidates before the election on Nov. 6.

The Democracy Commitment @ SF will sponsor the Forum, which is planned to give voters a chance to meet the person who will represent Alachua County in the next Congress. Republican Ted Yoho, Democrat J.R. Gaillot and Independent Phil Dodds will each present his case for being the next U.S. Representative, and there will be time for questions from the audience.

"We are pleased to host this educational event," explained Marilyn Tubb, co-chair of the Democracy Commitment @ SF. "All of the candidates are newcomers to elected office. This event gives voters a chance to meet each of them on an informal basis and ask them questions."

The Congressional Candidates Forum on Oct. 29, is the fourth voter education event this month sponsored by the Democracy Commitment @ SF. On Oct. 15, the college was the site of a program on Ballot Amendments, co-sponsored by the League of Women Voters, the Bob Graham Center for Public Service @ UF and the Center for Governmental Responsibility @ UF.

On Oct. 22, at 7 p.m. SF students were able to attend "Last Chance To Decide" viewing party of the final Presidential Debate, with free food and an opportunity to share "what democracy means to me." On Oct. 23, the college will host a candidates' forum for School Board Superintendent in Bradford County.

The Democracy Commitment @ SF is part of a nationwide initiative among leading community colleges to promote civic engagement and democratic practices. "The goal is that every student should have an education in democracy and should know what it means to be a good citizen," Tubb explained.
