ITS Reminder: Change in FTP Access

August 14, 2012

Colleagues,

We are preparing to migrate to a new Web hosting solution for the college which will hopefully provide for better connectivity and stability during our peak times, and well as improved responsiveness overall. For the most part this transition should be seamless, but for a few of you who interact directly with servers to manage your content there will be a period of slight adjustment.

Over the next week or so, the staff in College Relations and Information Technology Services will reach out directly to our "power users," if you will, to outline the process in greater detail, but in advance of that we wanted to give you a general rundown of events leading up to the launch.

1. On Friday, August 24, at 4:30 p.m. we will disable FTP access for all sites. This is being done to ensure that the content we are transferring over is the most current. Please plan ahead to make any content updates you will need available on the Web come Monday.

2. On Saturday, August 25, all Web content will be copied over to the new server. FTP access will continue to be disabled.

3. On Sunday, August 26, at 10 p.m. the new hosting solution will be launched. Because the web take many hours to notice a change of this magnitude FTP will continue to stay off line through Monday, August 27, so the old severs can still continue to server content.

4. On Tuesday, August 28 at 7:30 a.m. FTP access will be enabled again, although where you once accessed your files through either dept.sfcollege.edu or people.sfcollege.edu as your FTP host location, you will now need to append "FTP" to that address.

Example: dept.sfcollege.edu -> ftpdept.sfcollege.edu.

people.sfcollege.edu -> ftppeople.sfcollege.edu

Note: This is only in regard to FTP access not Web. Website accessed via dept.sfcollege.edu, or people.sfcollege.edu will remain unchanged. Anyone needing help making this change to their FTP client or HTML editor may contact the ITS help desk for assistance.
