Home Dedication for the Santa Fe II; July 19

July 17, 2012

A home dedication ceremony will be held at 9 a.m. Thursday, July 19, for the Santa Fe II Habitat for Humanity house. The event will bring together community partners, including the city, Bank of America and Alachua Habitat for Humanity for a ribbon cutting ceremony at the home, 3900 SE 13th Terrace, with the new homeowner.

The Santa Fe II was built in the construction bay of the Charles R. Perry Construction Institute on Santa Fe College's northwest campus, but is now located in the Robinson Heights neighborhood in southeast Gainesville. Construction on the house was finished in mid-April and it was transported on two flat-bed trailers to a wooded, residential lot that backs up to the Gainesville Hawthorne Trail. Flooring, a front and back porch, driveway and landscaping we completed at the home site.

Construction on the three bedroom, two bath, 1,248 square-foot house began in August 2011. Professor Fred Hart's Construction Management Students in the Construction Techniques I and II classes and Apprenticeship students did the majority of the work. Hart has taught construction for Santa Fe for 28 years, and for 20 of those years, he's guided his students in work on Habitat houses.

The house is a collaborative effort of the Builders Association of North Central Florida (BANCF), which sponsors the college's Apprenticeship programs; Alachua Habitat for Humanity; Bank of America, which donated $65,000 to Habitat for the project; and Santa Fe's Construction Management Technology and Apprenticeship classes.

Volunteers from SF's Student Builders Association, SF Student Government, and Habitat for Humanity also worked on the home. A local family contributed 400 hours of sweat equity and will assume the home's mortgage.
