– A message from Naima Brown
It is with great pleasure that I introduce Dr. Kim Fugate-Roberts as the new director of the SF Advisement, Counseling & Career Center. Dr. Fugate-Roberts will begin on August 1. Our new director not only brings in-depth knowledge and experience in each of the three areas that she will oversee, but she is also a dynamic, energetic, and student-centered leader who has a strong background in assessment. Please take a few minutes to familiarize yourself with Dr. Fugate-Roberts through her bio, below. We are very fortunate to welcome her into the Santa Fe College community.
Dr. Kim Fugate-Roberts comes to us from the University of Florida where she worked for the Department of Housing and Residence Education as the Assistant Director for Curriculum and Assessment. In this role she was responsible for the departmental assessment efforts, the educational/programmatic efforts in the residence halls, on-going professional staff development, and course curriculum and coordination for courses taught in the residence halls. Prior to 2011, she served the Department of Housing in a unique role. As the Residential Exploratory Advisor and Crisis Consultant, she was trained as an academic advisor for the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and provided advising for first year residence hall students. At this time, she was also the Coordinator of the Crisis Intervention Consultant team. As a member of this group, Kim was on-call 24/7 every third week to respond to any after-hours mental health crises of residence hall students and was a primary trainer for all residence hall staff in the areas of crisis intervention, suicide intervention, confrontation, helping skills, and sexual harassment prevention and served as a representative on both the Crisis Response Team and the University Counseling Resource Network.
Woven in her time at UF, Kim also served as a Faculty Preview Advisor for five summers, as a Faculty in Residence for six years, and as an adjunct instructor for the Department of Human Development and Organizational Studies where she designed and taught the Counseling for Student Affairs Professionals course and provided group supervision to Student Personnel in Higher Education graduate students in their first practical experiences.
Prior to her UF experience, Kim spent a semester as a Resident Director with Semester at Sea and traveled to 12 different countries, leading student excursions in the Amazon region, Tanzania, India and China. She also spent a semester teaching Developmental Writing at Santa Fe College.
As a young professional, Kim was very involved in Housing and Residence Education and spent her first professional years as an Area Coordinator at Appalachian State University and Murray State University.
Kim received her Ph.D. in Mental Health Counseling from the University of Florida where her concentration was in the area of crisis intervention. Her two internships were at the Career Resource Center and at Student Mental Health. She received her Master's in Student Development from Appalachian State University and her Bachelor's in Psychology from Stetson University.
Current research and professional interests are in the areas of community development, career/life path development/planning, effective teaching/training and learning, and crisis management.
Kim grew up in Lake Mary, FL and is actually a third generation native Floridian. Her favorite accomplishment, by far, is becoming and serving as a parent to her 4 year old son, Reid. The Robert's family enjoys traveling, going to Disney, hosting friends for food and fun, and working on the house and yard (this summer's project is painting inside and maintaining a small vegetable garden).
