SF FASTPITCH – May 8, 2012

Gainesville, FL – Sophomore pitcher Stephanie Cameron was recently honored by the Florida College System Activities Assoction as the fastpitch scholar athlete of the year and received the Jean Williams Award for her work on the field and in the classroom. She was selected from the over 400 fastpitch student athletes in the FCSAA.

Along with the Jean Williams Award, Cameron also won the Dr. Portia Taylor Academic Excellence Award, given this year for the first time to the SF athlete in each sport with the highest GPA and was also inducted in to the Santa Fe College Hall of Fame.

"It was a no-brainer to nominate Stephanie for the Jean Williams award, the highest academic award bestowed by the FCSAA, and it wasn't a surprise that she won it," said SF Coach Chris Ahern. "In the same way, I had no hesitation to nominate her for the Dr. Portia Taylor award, for the same reason.

"Stephanie has been a wonderful addition to our program. She works as hard or harder than anyone on our team in softball and the amount of work she puts in on her academics shows up in her GPA. She will go far in life, as she can do anything she puts her mind to. We will miss her and wish her the best."

Cameron finished her sophomore season at Santa Fe with a 3.75 ERA and 25 strikeouts in 28 innings pitched.

She is currently taking visits to upper division schools and will make a decision soon on where she will continue her academic and playing career.

"We are so proud of Stephanie's academic accomplishments here at Santa Fe," Ahern said. "She has managed to do what few can: play a full time sport year round and maintain a nearly 4.0 GPA. And the level of the courses she has taken is the very highest – all the hardest classes you can imagine, she has aced."
