Garcia Shuts Out FSC-J, Saints Advance with 2-0 Win (FCSAA Tournament)

April 29, 2012

SF FASTPITCH – 4/28/2012

Pensacola, FL – Erika Garcia saved her best performance of the tournament thus far for the Santa Fe Saints elimination game against Florida State College – Jacksonville, tossing a shutout to pace SF past the Stars 2-0. The Saints now move on to play Seminole State College on Sunday at 10:00 AM CST for a spot in the NJCAA National Tournament in St. George, Utah. SF will have to beat the Raiders twice to claim the Atlantic District championship.

Garcia started in the circle and scattered seven hits, striking out two. The Santa Fe offense gave her a run to work with in the early going when Kim Booker knocked in lead off hitter Karla Claudio in the first inning.

The Saints added a run in the fourth when Ashley Holton plated Brittney Mayhill for the 2-0 lead.

Garcia and a stout Santa Fe defense shut down any would be Stars rally over the final three innings, and Ashley Holton sealed the deal by making a tough play on a slow roller to short that Karla Claudio dug out at first for the final out.

The Santa Fe offense finished with 11 hits and a .440 average. PSBLive Player of the Game Brittney Mayhill was 2-for-3 with a run scored, Ashley Holton finished 2-for-2 with an RBI, Karla Claudio was 2-for-3, Kim Booker was 2-for-3 with a RBI and Alaysia Miller was 2-for-4.

The Saints meet Seminole tomorrow at 10:00 AM CST (11:00 AM EST) in the Atlantic District finals. Santa Fe will have to win twice to advance. Should they defeat the Raiders twice, they will clinch a spot in the NJCAA Tournament and move on to the FCSAA State Championship game against the winner of the Gulf District.
