Wednesday Message from Ed Bonahue
April 26, 2012
Dear Everyone,
Happy last week of the semester. A few reminders this week, an important new opportunity to share, and a few things to celebrate.
Reminders:
· Evaluation survey links have been provided to all academic chairs and directors for distribution to faculty. Please take a few minutes to complete an evaluation and let your chair or director know how they're doing.
· The ad hoc College Senate committee studying online education still invites you to take their survey at Online Education survey (available at http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/YKMWGYV ) to register your ideas about online education at Santa Fe.
· The annual college awards presentation will take place this Friday afternoon in the Fine Arts Hall. Festivities begin at 2:15 with a reception for all faculty, and the awards ceremony begins at 2:45. Please come to honor those colleagues who have been nominated and chosen for awards recognizing distinguished service and civic engagement, excellence in teaching, and excellence in advising.
New Program in Marine Biology
This summer, through a new partnership with the University of Florida, Santa Fe students will have some extraordinary opportunities to enroll in classes in marine biology, marine coastal conservation, and coastal disturbance ecology. Classes will be offered throughout the summer by faculty from the University at the Seahorse Key Marine Lab, near Cedar Key, Florida. All classes will involve extensive fieldwork relating to marine resources, and short-term residence in the Cedar Key area. For more information, please click hereor contact Prof. Sture Edvardsson, Chair of the Natural Sciences department (395-5842), for details on registration.
Sing into Spring
Need a break from grading? On Thursday evening at 7:30, the Fine Arts Department will offer its spring choral concert, featuring large- and small-group student performances of choral and popular works ranging from Puccini to Katy Perry. Admission is free to anyone with a SF ID.
Success Story 1
Santa Fe's Engineering Club Team Rocket successfully launched its rocket (nicknamed Moby Dick) at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, AL on Sunday April 22. The rocket, built with the expert guidance of Jimmy Yawn, fired correctly, flew beautifully and was in good shape when it was retrieved by the team. The rocket reached an altitude of 4539 feet to carry its mission goal: AHAB (Analysis of High Altitude Behavior) which included a Biotech experiment. The launch was broadcast live by NASA television on Sunday and can also be viewed athttp://www.ustream.tv/recorded/22041719/highlight/258637 (though you may have to reload the link a couple of times to make it work properly). Congratulations and many thanks to Engineering Club mentors and professors of physics Karim Diff and Lila Tache, to Rocket Man Jimmy Yawn, and to the whole club on their accomplishment.
Success Story 2
Congratulations to the Santa Fe Nursing Programs department on completing the successful reaccreditation of their programs through NLNAC. The NLNAC Board of Commissioners has confirmed continuing accreditation for both the PN and the ASN Programs through 2017, with the next site visit planned for fall 2017! Congratulations to all the faculty and staff in the Nursing Programs department who have worked hard on this accreditation project for over two years to bring about this successful conclusion.
Success Story 3
Santa Fe has had a thriving program in Aviation for many years, with students studying either aviation management or pilot training curricula in pursuit of an A.S. degree. I don't often get a chance to write about the program, but this week, program coordinator George Mazzeo reported that four of our current students have been hired last week as customer service agents by Silver Airways, which has just established a new operation at Gainesville Regional Airport, providing commuter service to Orlando and Tampa airports. Congratulations to the students and to the program.
