SF's Paramedic Class Hosts EMS Competition

April 12, 2012

On March 31, 2012, the Paramedic class from Santa Fe College (on the Institute of Public Safety (IPS) Campus) coordinated and judged at the Emergency Medical Technician competition at the Health Occupation Students of America (HOSA) State leadership Conference in Jacksonville.

The paramedic class volunteered to create the scenario, and then assigned themselves as actors and judges. They played a victim with a dog bite on his arm and an older gentleman with chest pains. They provided information to the competing EMT teams and evaluated the team's actions using judging sheets from the HOSA competitive events guide.

There were 17 teams competing in the State Leadership Conference EMT competition this year. The EMT competitors are members of their local High School HOSA club and have been trained in providing care at the EMT level. The EMT teams consisted of two rescuers which must properly assess and treat the victims of the scenario. Each team won at their districts Regional Leadership Conference and the top three from this competition will represent the State of Florida at the National Leadership Conference EMT competition in June.

I would like to thank all the Phase Two Paramedic students (and Associate Professor Brittany Williams) for all their hard work, creating and coordinating this competition. It is great to have students who are involved in the medical community and at not afraid to jump in and volunteer to help.
