MARKEY TOSSES COMPLETE GAME FIVE HITTER AGAINST CENTRAL FLORIDA, SAINTS WIN 5-1

Box Score

Gainesville, FL -Sophomore pitcher Brad Markey (8-3, 1.48 ERA) had one of the best outings of his collegiate career on Friday afternoon, holding the College of Central Florida to just one unearned run on five hits in a 5-1 Santa Fe victory. The win gives SF a three game lead over second place CF in the Mid-Florida Conference race with seven games to play. The Saints (32-9, 14-3 MFC) are chasing their fourth straight conference crown.

Markey and CF starter Kevin Games traded zeros until the Saints finally broke through in the top of the fifth for two runs. Ryan Rodriguez started the frame with a walk and advanced to second on a stolen base. Two batters later Caleb Denmark knocked him in with a single to center. Trey Griffin then stepped in and plated Jacob Tillotson with a single past the diving shortstop.

Santa Fe put two more on the board in the seventh to expand their lead to 4-0. Rodriguez again started the rally with a walk and moved to second on a single by Smith. Jacob Tillotson knocked them both in with a single to center that was bobbled by the centerfielder, allowing the speedy Smith to score all the way from first.

The Patriots got one run back on a SF error in the eighth, but the Saints answered in the ninth with a run on a bases loaded walk by Blake Berger.

Markey used a double play in the bottom of the ninth to make quick work of the Patriots, sealing a Santa Fe win.

The Saints had 10 hits in all and Mallex Smith, Jacob Tillotson, Caleb Denmark and AJ Mazzurco had two hits apiece. SF won despite leaving 13 men on base.

On Monday, April 9 Santa Fe travels to Daytona State for a MFC game against the Falcons at 3:00 PM.
