REMES AND THE SAINTS CRUISE PAST ST. JOHN'S 13-2

Box Score

Palatka, FL – Tim Remes led a stout Santa Fe offense on Friday night as the Santa Fe Saints (22-8, 5-2 MFC) cruised past Mid-Florida Conference rival St. John's River State College 13-2 in an eight inning mercy rule. The sophomore catcher finished 2-for-3 with a homerun, six RBI and a run scored to lead the way.

Brad Markey started on the hill and scattered eight hits over seven innings, surrendering just two unearned runs for his fifth win of the season. In the process he lowered his ERA to a microscopic 1.06.

"Brad pitched really well tonight," said SF coach Johnny Wiggs. "He pitched himself out of some jams early and kept us in the game when our hitters were struggling through the first few innings."

The Saints opened the scoring with three in the fourth innings and built on their lead in the sixth with three more for a 6-0 advantage. SF put the game out of reach with five more in the seventh and capped the game with two in the eighth.

St. John's avoided a seven inning mercy rule by scoring two in the bottom of the seventh to keep hope alive, but the Saints two in the eighth were the final nail in the coffin.

Shane Kennedy finished 3-for-5 with a homerun and three RBI and Mallex Smith was 3-for-5 with a homerun, two RBI, two runs and a stolen base

"Our hitters started off slow but really got it together in the fourth," said Wiggs. "They retired us in order through the first three innings but our second time through the lineup we were able to adjust and make some things happen."

The two teams meet again on Saturday, March 17 in Gainesville at 1:00 PM.
