SAINTS WEEKLY WRAP-UP: February 20-26

Gainesville, FL – Recap of the week in sports at Santa Fe College:

Men's Basketball (1-0 on the week, 25-4 overall) The Santa Fe Saints (25-4) took care of business on Saturday, February 25 against St. John's River State College in their last regular season game, defeating the Vikings 77-62 to claim a share of the Mid-Florida Conference title and a spot in the FCSAA State Tournament.

"Really proud of the guys today," said SF coach Chris Mowry. "We only had seven players dress and each of them had an impact on the game. Everyone contributed, played hard and did what they needed to do to get us to the state tournament."

The Saints travel to Marianna, FL on March 7-10 for the FCSAA State Tournament. SF, the #2 Mid-Florida Conference seed, will face off against the champions of the Suncoast Conference, St. Petersburg College, at 1:00 PM CST on March 7 in first round action. All games can be watched live on www.psblive.com. The tournament is single elimination. The winner advances on to Hutchinson, Kansas for the NJCAA Tournament.

Women's Basketball (1-0 on the week, 9-21 overall) Sophomore Stephenie Coney ended her Santa Fe career on a high note Saturday afternoon, scoring a game high 20 points to lead the Saints past Hillsborough CC 64-53. The Saints (9-21, 3-9 MFC) finish their season with back to back wins.

Baseball (3-2 on the week, 16-5 overall) The #1 Santa Fe Saints had a rough day at the plate on Monday, February 20 against Pasco-Hernando CC, stranding 15 runners on base in a 5-4 loss. SF left the bases loaded four times and failed to get a hit with runners in scoring position.

The Saints bounced back two days later as Shane Kennedy came up big Wednesday, February 22, drilling a one out double in the twelfth inning, plating two runs to break a 4-4 tie with St. Petersburg College. Caleb Denmark closed out the game with a 1-2-3 bottom of the twelfth.

A four run seventh followed by a five run eighth, powered by a Tim Remes grand slam, turned a close game into a rout on Friday, February 24, as the FCSAA #1/NJCAA #9 Santa Fe Saints took game one of the three game series against FCSAA #3 Tallahassee Community College, 12-1, snapping the Eagles eight game win streak.

SF took game one of a double header 3-2 on Saturday, February 25 against Tallahassee CC, clinching the three game series. TCC (13-5) salvaged the second game of the double header, defeating SF 7-4.

The Saints open defense of their Mid-Florida Conference title on Friday, March 2 when Daytona State College comes to town for the MFC opener at 3:00 PM.

Fastpitch (2-5 on the week, 6-10 overall) The Santa Fe Saints continued their early season struggles on Tuesday, February 21 against State College of Florida, dropping a double header 1-0 and 3-1.

Freshman Amber Richardson was nearly unhittable for Santa Fe College on Thursday, February 23 in game one of a double header against the #1 team in the state Tallahassee CC, as she scattered three hits over seven innings in the 2-0 Santa Fe victory. TCC bounced back in game two, defeating SF 2-0 despite having just one hit.

The Saints lost two of three on Saturday, February 25 at the Polk College Spring Tournament, dropping their first game of the day to FCSAA #1 Tallahassee CC 6-0. Polk State then handed SF their second loss of the day 8-2 before the Saints took their frustration out on Oakland CC 12-3 in a five inning mercy rule game.

SF plays a double header at home on Friday, March 2 against Hillsborough CC at 2:00 PM.
