CONEY GOES FOR 20 AS SAINTS WIN BACK TO BACK TO END SEASON
Tampa, FL – Sophomore Stephenie Coney ended her Santa Fe career on a high note Saturday afternoon, scoring a game high 20 points to lead the Saints past Hillsborough CC 64-53. The Saints (9-21, 3-9 MFC) finish their season with back to back wins.
"This was a nice win for us today," said SF coach Chanda Stebbins. "I thought we played well on defense and really forced them to do some things they weren't comfortable with."
The Saints trailed by one at the half, 28-27, but turned things around in the second period behind a suffocating defense. SF outscored the Hawks 37-25 over the final 20 minutes to secure the victory.
Coney led the way with 20 points, five rebounds and three assists, Alexis Fitts scored 15, Cassandra Brown had nine points and 11 rebounds and Stephanie Edwards scored six to go with seven boards.
"Cassandra did a nice job rebounding and limiting their second chance opportunities," said Stebbins. "Coney drove the ball to the basket very well and everyone knocked down their free throws today. Those things combined usually equal up to positive results."
"The way we've played the last three games is indicative of the talent we have. I wish we could have flipped the switch and played hard like this the whole season, but we can still take away some positives and build on them for next year. We have 12 freshman that did a lot of growing up this year and they will continue to mature and improve over the offseason."
