DATYONA HANGS ON AGAINST SANTA FE, 44-42
Gainesville, FL – The Santa Fe Saints (7-21, 1-9 MFC) led by as many as eight points and took a five point lead into the half time break but failed to hold on against Daytona State College on Wednesday night. The Falcons rallied in the second half for the 44-42 victory.
"I was proud of our effort tonight, especially in the first half," said SF coach Chanda Stebbins. "We didn't execute like we needed to in the second half and it cost us down the stretch."
The Saints jumped out early on DSC and led 17-9 with seven minutes to go in the first half. Daytona chipped away and cut the lead to three, but back to back layups by Stephanie Edwards and Tiara Thompson took the lead out to 23-16. Daytona's Karen Flagg hit two free throws with 19 seconds left to make the half time score 23-18.
Daytona took their first lead of the game at the 13 minute mark and the score was back and forth the rest of the way. Santa Fe tied the score at 40-40 with 7:25 remaining but managed only two points the rest of the way. DSC scored just four but it was enough to pull out the victory. With the win, the Falcons remain on top of the MFC with a 8-2 record.
Tiara Thompson led SF with 14 points, Lonna Turner had nine points and six rebounds and Stephanie Edwards scored eight.
The final home game for the Saints is on Saturday, February 18 against Florida State College – Jacksonville at 2:00 PM. The game can be watched live on www.psblive.com.
