SAINTS HANG ON AGAINST POLK STATE, 6-5
Winter Haven, FL – For the second time this season JT Simpson shut down the Polk State College Eagles, holding them to two runs over six innings with six strikeouts on Wednesday evening in Winter Haven. Felix Roque pitched the seventh and eighth innings and Caleb Denmark pitched the ninth. The win is the second over Polk in the last seven days. SF won 10-1 on February 1 in Gainesville.
The FCSAA #1/NJCAA #9 Saints (7-1) scored all of their runs in the second inning and that was all Simpson and the bullpen would need. AJ Mazzurco started the frame with a walk and Denmark and Blake Berger followed with back to back singles to plate the first run.
The next batter, Garrett Greenwell stepped to the plate and was hit by a pitch. Jake Tillotson then hit a hot shot to second base, which was misplayed, scoring another SF run. Drew Doty kept the Santa Fe rally going with a two RBI double and Trey Griffin capped the inning with an RBI double of his own.
Polk got two runs back in the third and made it a game in the ninth with three runs on three hits and two errors but Denmark was able to close the door and preserve the Saints win.
Drew Doty led the offense, going 2-for-5 with a double and two RBI, Caleb Denmark finished 2-for-4 and Blake Berger was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.
The Saints return home on Friday, February 10 against Indian River State College at 3:00 PM and continue the home stand on Saturday with a double header against South Florida Community College starting at 12:00 PM.
