Remes and Griffin Homer, Saints Pound South Georgia 8-1

SAINTS POUND SOUTH GEORGIA COLLEGE 8-1 Douglas, GA – Sophomores Trey Griffin and Tim Remes (pictured) homered as the #9 NJCAA Santa Fe Saints cruised past 2011 JuCo World Series participant South Georgia College 8-1 on opening day in Douglas, GA. Remes led a potent Santa Fe offense, finishing 3-for-4 with two RBI.
Sophomore Brad Markey pitched six solid innings for SF, allowing just one run with three strikeouts and no walks. Freshman JT Simpson relieved Markey and shutout South Georgia in the seventh and eighth innings, striking out three and Caleb Denmark closed the game out with a scoreless ninth.
SGC gave away two runs right away, allowing two Saints to cross the plate on two errors in the first inning. Remes scored Santa Fe's third run of the game on another South Georgia error after singling to start the inning.
The Tigers of SGC scored their only run of the game in the fourth and SF answered back in the sixth with three to put the game away. Shortstop Jacob Tillotson started the inning with a single and Remes followed with a two run homerun. Left fielder Mallex Smith tripled later in the inning, third baseman Graham Ramos walked and center fielder Drew Doty singled in the Saints sixth run of the game.
In the seventh Tillotson safety squeezed designated hitter Shane Kennedy in to make the score 7-1. Griffin put an exclamation point on the victory on the win with a deep homerun in the ninth.
Griffin finished the game 2-for-4 with a homerun, Mallex Smith was 2-for-4 with a triple, Ramos was 2-for-4, and Tollotson went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
The Saints continue against South Georgia College on Sunday, January 29 with a double header scheduled to start at 1:00 PM. Sophomores Lawrence Pardo and Ryan Yarbrough will start on the mound for Santa Fe.
