SAINTS RUN PAST DAYTONA 66-45, IMPROVE TO 19-3 Daytona, FL – A strong defensive effort and a run late in the first half were enough to propel the FCSAA #4 Santa Fe Saints past Daytona State College 66-45 on Saturday afternoon, moving the Saints to 19-3 overall and a conference best 5-1 in the MFC.
The game was close over the first five minutes before the Saints clamped down on defense and pulled away for a 39-21 lead at the half.
"Our guys played very unselfish today," said SF coach Chris Mowry. "We didnt shoot the ball particularly well but made up for it on the defensive end."
SF continued to apply defensive pressure in the second period and cruised to the 21 point victory, holding DSC to 45 points and just 3-of-20 from the three point line.
Junior McLeod finished the game with a double double, notching 11 points and 11 rebound. Kevin Harden scored a game high 16, Matt Conway had 15 points and eight rebounds, and Paul Stone scored 10.
"We had good contributions from everyone today," said Mowry. "We won the rebound battle 51-43 and assisted on 15 of our 23 baskets, which is a great number. If we continue to play the way we are on defense we will give ourselves a chance in every game."
The first place Saints travel to Florida State College – Jacksonville on Wednesday, February 1 for a game against the Stars at 8:00 PM.
