CENTRAL FLORIDA SENDS SAINTS TO FOURTH STRAIGHT LOSS, 54-52
Gainesville, FL – The three time defending Mid-Florida Conference champion Santa Fe Saints (7-16, 1-4 MFC) dropped their fourth straight game on Wednesday, January 25, this time by two to rivals College of Central Florida. The loss evens the season series with the Patriots at 1-1. SF defeated CCF 51-44 on January 7 in Ocala.
Stephanie Edwards led the Saints to a 20-17 halftime lead with eight points in the first period.
"Stephanie did a nice job for us tonight, but overall we really struggled in the first half and turned the ball over way too much," said SF Coach Chanda Stebbins. "We settled for too many jumpers and again didn't finish like we need to inside. We lost a lot of opportunities on high percentage shots."
Both teams upped the offensive production in the second half and traded the lead for most of the half. Quinnecia Twine took the game over for CCF scoring all 18 of her points in the final 20 minutes.
"We played better in the second half, but Twine really hurt us," said Stebbins. "We just didn't have an answer for her defensively after shutting her out in the first half."
Santa Fe trailed late in the game when Lydia Cuff stepped to the free throw line with 2:37 to go and tied the score at 50-50. A three point play by TiChina Mitchell gave the lead back to the Patriots and the Saints were unable to capitalize over the final one minute and fell 54-52.
Edwards led Santa Fe with 21 points, Cassandra Brown had 10 points with six rebounds and Lydia Cuff scored seven points and pulled down a team high 12 rebounds.
The Saints travel to Daytona State on Saturday, January 28 for a MFC game against the Falcons scheduled to tip-off at 2:00 PM. The men follow against the Falcons at 4:00 PM.
