SAINTS STRUGGLE OFFENSIVELY IN LOSS TO DAYTONA, 44-40
Gainesville, FL – The Santa Fe Saints couldn't overcome a sluggish start on Wednesday evening against Daytona State, and fell to the Falcons 44-40 to even their both teams Mid-Florida Conference records at 1-1.
"We didn't attack enough offensively and settled for too many jumpers," said SF Coach Chanda Stebbins. "You can't score 40 points in this conference and ever expect to win."
SF (7-13, 1-1 MFC) managed only 13 points in the first half and shot just 5-for-30. Daytona didn't fare much better, notching 20 points on 8-for-25 shooting for the seven point halftime lead.
The Saints bounced back in the second half, tying the score early in the period at 22-22 with 16 minutes to go. The score went back and forth with four ties until a five point run by Daytona with five minutes to go in the game gave the Falcons the lead for good. SF managed to cut it to 40-38 but got no closer as DSC held on for the win.
"I was relatively pleased with our defensive effort, but we didn't finish plays or box out like we need to," said Stebbins. "We gave up too many second chance points."
Stephanie Edwards led Santa Fe with nine points, Tiara Thompson had six points and seven rebounds, and Lydia Cuff scored six.
The Saints continue at home on Saturday when they welcome Florida state College at Jacksonville for a 2:00 PM Mid-Florida Conference game.
"We have to play much better on Saturday if we want to get a win against FSC-J," said Stebbins. "They are going to play hard for 40 minutes and give us all we can handle. We have a couple days of practice to get ready to go."
