SF WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

GULF COAST GAINS A MEASURE OF REVENGE WITH WIN OVER SAINTS, 86-54

Gainesville, FL -NJCAA #7 Gulf Coast State College showed on Friday afternoon why they are a top ten team in the nation, handing Santa Fe an 86-54 loss, dropping the Saints to 5-12. The win improves the Commodores record to 12-1, their only loss coming at the hands of SF on November 21, 66-60.

Gulf Coast didn’t want to drop a second game in Gainesville this season and came out hot, staking themselves to an early 20-13 lead at the 11:40 mark. The Saints fought back and cut the margin to 20-18 before a 16-8 run by GC stretched the advantage back out to double digits.

The Commodores gave the Saints a heavy dose of post players Markeisha Gatling and Uju Ugoka in the first half, as they combined to lead Gulf Coast to a 49-31 half time lead.

It was much of the same in the second half as the Commodores continued to pound the ball inside and expand their lead. GC scored 20 of their 37 second period points in the paint and 40 total points in route to the 86-54 victory. Forwards Gatling and Ugoka combined for 35 points on 15-for-21 shooting and 12 rebounds. The Saints were outrebounded by GC 55-33 on the game.

“Markeisha [Gatling] and Uju [Ugoka] did a real nice job tonight scoring inside,” said SF Coach Chanda Stebbins. “We never really had an answer for them all game. You can’t expect to win a game when you give up that many post points and are outrebounded by 22. We have to be more physical down low.”

Stephanie Edwards led SF in scoring with 17, Alexis Fitts added eight and Stephanie Coney had seven.

The Saints will take a few days off before returning to action January 3 against The Rock at 6:00 PM in their last game before the Mid-Florida Conference schedule begins.
