Saints Upset Previously Undefeated Chipola in Overtime, 80-74

December 17, 2011 Contact: Scott Jamison 352-395-5616 scott.jamison@sfcollege.edu SF MEN’S BASKETBALL SAINTS UPSET PREVIOUSLY UNDEFEATED CHIPOLA COLLEGE IN OVERTIME, 80-74 Winter Haven, FL – The Santa Fe Saints pulled out a thrilling overtime victory on Saturday night at the Polk Classic, upsetting previously unbeaten and #4 team in the nation Chipola College 80-74.
The Saints (11-2) trailed at the halftime break 40-34 but used a stifling defensive effort in the second half to rally, holding the Indians (13-1) to just 24 points over the final 20 minutes to force overtime.
Santa Fe out scored Chipola 16-10 in overtime to earn the victory. The difference in the game came at the free throw line where SF out scored the Indians 34-14 and shot 79%.
Kevin Harden led the scoring attack for Santa Fe netting 21 points on 9-of-20 shooting. Altavious Carter finished with 15 points and nine rebounds, Keshaun Hamilton had 10 points, all on free throws to go with nine rebounds and Brian Holmes scored 16.
“This was a good win for our team,” said SF Coach Chris Mowry. “We did a nice job bouncing back from the loss to St. Pete and showed a lot of resiliency fighting back in the second half tonight against a very good Chipola squad.”
The Saints continue in the Polk Classic on Sunday when they face off against Tampa Swish at 3:00 PM.
