Gainesville, FL – For the second time in her short career at Santa Fe College and before she ever plays an official college game, freshman fastpitch star Karla Claudio-Rivera will join her native Puerto Rico for a world tournament, this time in Cape Town, South Africa for the IX ISF Junior Women’s World Tournament.

Back in October, Claudio-Rivera competed at the world’s biggest stage for women’s fastpitch at the Pan American Games in Mexico.  She hit .389 with a .611 slugging percentage, .500 on base percentage and seven runs batted in.

Sixteen teams from all over the world are competing in the 10 day ISF Junior Women’s World tournament with action getting under way tonight in Cape Town after opening ceremonies.

Number five seed Puerto Rico opens against #16 Czech Republic on Thursday, December 8 at 10:30 AM EST.  This game and every other game on Field 1 are viewable on a live online feed: http://jwwc2011.co.za/live-streaming/.

“We continue to be impressed by Karla and the level of her talent,” said SF Coach Chris Ahern.  “We are not surprised she has been asked once again to represent Puerto Rico at the Junior Women’s World tournament in South Africa.  Her drive is not only on the field: she finished all her schoolwork and took her final exams two weeks before hand so she could be part of such an amazing event.  We wish Karla and all the participants and wonderful week of games, and are looking forward to seeing some of the games online.”
