SF WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

BROWARD RALLIES IN THE SECOND HALF TO DEFEAT SANTA FE, 72-67

Gainesville, FL – The Santa Fe Saints (5-8) controlled the early going against Broward College but the Seahawks mounted a furious rally over the final ten minutes of the game to upend SF 72-67 in the final game of the Women’s Florida College Shootout.

“Broward did a great job in the second half, they deserve a lot of credit for the way they played,” said SF Coach Chanda Stebbins. “They shot the ball very well and out hustled us down the stretch with the game on the line.”

The FCSAA #8 Saints took a nine point lead into the halftime break and built the lead to 54-37 before Broward turned the tables. Strong outside shooting by Seahawk guards Kianna Connor (24 points) and Yishica Sims (20) and solid team free throw shooting proved to be the difference in a close game.

“We have to be more consistent with our effort,” said Stebbins. “It takes 40 minutes to win games at this level. We need to rebound better, get the ball inside and quit taking so many ill-advised perimeter shots.”

Broward outscored Santa Fe 38-24 in the second period, including an 11-3 advantage at the foul line.

Stephanie Coney led Santa Fe scorers with 14 points, Stephanie Edwards had 12 and Shanice Clark 11.

The Saints travel to Palm Beach State College on Friday, December 9 for a rematch against the Panthers at 6:00 PM. PBSC defeated the Saints 67-64 on November 4.
