SAINTS KNOCK OFF NJCAA #15 CHIPOLA COLLEGE, 55-51
Niceville, FL – The Santa Fe Saints (3-6) continued where they left off last Monday and pulled off another upset on Friday afternoon, defeating NJCAA nationally ranked #15 Chipola College 55-51 at the Rick Flores Classic at Northwest Florida State College.
The Saints dominated the first half, outscoring the Indians 29-14. Freshman Alexis Fitts led the charge in the first period, hitting 13 of her 16 points in the first 20 minutes.
"I was very proud of our defensive effort in the first half," said SF Coach Chanda Stebbins. "We came out with a lot of energy and controlled a very high powered offense for 20 minutes. Alexis did a nice job for us on the offensive end."
Chipola (6-3) chipped away at the lead in the second half and with just a few minutes to play cut the lead down to three. The Indians fouled Stephenie Coney who stepped up to the line and knocked down both free throws to extend the lead back to five. Chipola answered right back with a basket to cut it to 54-51. Coney again stepped up and made one of two free throws to ice the game.
"I'm very happy with the composure we showed at the end of the game," said Stebbins. "This is a big win for our team. We need to keep the intensity up tomorrow when we face a very talented Northwest Florida team."
Fitts finished with a game high 16 points, including four three pointers, Coney scored 11 to go with five assists, Stephanie Edwards added eight points and three steals and Tiara Thompson scored nine.
The Saints face off against another nationally ranked opponent when they play NJCAA #4 Northwest Florida State on Saturday at 5:30 PM CST.
