Openings Available in Free Summer Camps for Middle and High School Students in East Gainesville

June 7, 2011

There are a few spaces open in two free summer camps coordinated by the Office of Community Outreach and East Gainesville Instruction. The camps are open to students living in east Gainesville, and to be considered for the camps, students must make a commitment to attend the entire week.

The Math, Science, Astronomy and Life Skills Middle School Summer Camp meets June 13-19. This camp is designed to make middle school students enthusiastic learners and to demonstrate how math and science are at the root of many exciting and high-paying careers. In addition to astronomy and math activities, students will engage in team building exercises and classes in sewing, CPR and carpentry. This camp meets at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church, 2505 NE 8th Ave., from 8 a.m.-noon. A free lunch is served at noon with leisure activities provided until 1 p.m.

Camp Money Que$t is a financial literacy camp for high school students. It meets June 20-25 at the Blount Center. Students will learn about budgeting, opening a checking account and using it wisely, shopping for a car, using credit, investing in the stock market and how to use the Internet to learn "real life" money skills. The camp includes field trips to a local bank, an auto dealership, and the Jacksonville branch of the Federal Reserve Bank. Students also receive a free book, "Financial Literacy for Teens."

Camp MoneyQue$t meets:

  • 6-7:30 p.m. June 20
  • 9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. June 21-24
  • 10 a.m.-noon June 25

Anyone interested in applying to either camp should contact Dr. Karen Cole-Smith at 381-3840.
