SAINTS STAY ALIVE AT FCSAA TOURNAMENT WITH 4-1 WIN OVER INDIAN RIVER

Lakeland, FL – Ben O’Shea (9-2) pitched the game the Santa Fe Saints needed out of him on Sunday, guiding SF to a 4-1 victory over Indian River State and a spot in the next round of the FCSAA Tournament. The Saints (36-10-1) will face either Chipola College or Broward College on Monday at 1:00 PM in another elimination game.

“Ben came out throwing the ball outstanding, hitting his spots on both sides of the plate with is fast ball and really threw his breaking ball well,” said SF Coach Johnny Wiggs. “He got some big outs against some very dangerous hitters in the middle of the order when we needed it.”

Jay Laurienzo broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth with a two out RBI single, scoring Trey Griffin who had previously doubled with two outs.

In the fifth, Garrett Greenwell started the frame with a walk and two batters later Jordan Turner drew a walk to put runners on first and second. Leadoff batter Austin Lawrence delivered an RBI single and Jake Huxtable followed him with an RBI groundout to give SF a 3-0 lead.

Griffin came up with another big two out hit in the eighth, singling home Lawrence for a 4-1 margin.

“Trey and Jay came up with some big two out hits to get us on the board and expand the lead late in the game,” said Wiggs.

Chris Lee relieved O’Shea in the seventh and pitched three scoreless innings, scattering three hits while striking out three to earn the save.

“Chris Lee did a nice job throwing strikes and was spotting his fastball and mixing in a nice slider,” said Wiggs. “He worked ahead to most batters he faced and really buckled down with runners on base.”

The Saints move on in the double elimination tournament to face the loser of the Chipola and Broward game at 1:00 PM on Monday, May 9. The contest can be heard live on Sports Radio 850 AM WRUF and watched live on www.psblive.com.
