SAINTS SWEEP LAKE SUMTER 2-1 and 4-1, CLINCH A SHARE OF MFC TITLE FOR SEVENTH STRAIGHT SEASON
Gainesville, FL – The Santa Fe Saints (41-10, 20-4 MFC) needed 11 innings to take game one of a double header against Lake Sumter CC on Monday afternoon and finished off game two in regulation.
The two wins clinch a share of the MFC title for the Saints for the seventh straight season. SF is co-champions with Florida State College at Jacksonville, who also finished 20-4 in conference and split with SF 2-2 in the regular season. The Saints have won the previous six titles outright.
Colena Lazar (29-7) started game one in the circle for Santa Fe and pitched all 11 innings to pick up her 29th win of the season.
Neither team scored through the first nine innings and the game went to the Texas tiebreaker in the tenth (each team starts with a runner on second). Lake Sumter scored first but the Saints matched them with one in the bottom of the tenth on a suicide squeeze play.
In the 11th inning, SF pulled out the walk off victory when Jaimee Vega scored the winning run on a LSCC throwing error.
Jasmine Warren (9-3) pitched game two and LSCC to just one run on four hits. The Lake Sumter run came in the first inning to give them a 1-0 lead.
Ashley Curry tied things up in the bottom of the first when she doubled home Bianca Torres.
The Saints took their first lead in the fourth on a bases loaded walk. They added two insurance runs in the sixth inning on a single down the right field line by Gia Tomossone.
Santa Fe wraps up the regular season on Saturday, April 22 at home against non-conference opponent Hillsborough CC at 1:00 PM.
