SAINTS SWEEP DAYTONA 6-1 AND 4-2, TOMOSSONE TIES SF ALL TIME HOMERUN MARK
Gainesville, FL – Colena Lazar continued her winning ways on Thursday afternoon in Gainesville against Daytona State College, leading the Saints (38-9, 17-3 MFC) to a two game sweep of the Falcons. She struck out 11 batters on the day.
Gia Tomossone hit her third homerun in four games and ninth of the season in game two of the double header, moving her into a tie with Sherquita Bostick for career homeruns at 21.
Lazar (28-6) received plenty of offensive support in game one, but it wasn't until the fifth inning that the Saints got themselves on the board.
Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the fifth, SF loaded the bases with no outs on three straight singles by Jaimee Vega, Gia Tomossone and Alaysia Miller. Ashley Curry delivered a two RBI single to give Santa Fe a 2-1 lead and two batters later Ashley Holton pushed two more runs across with a double to right center.
SF tacked on two insurance runs in the sixth on a Jaimee Vega double and a Falcon error.
Ashley Curry finished game one 2-for-3 with two RBI, Jaimee Vega was 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored and Bionca Torres was 2-for-3.
Daytona took an early 1-0 lead in game two without tallying a hit. Colena Lazar hit two batters to start the game and a Santa Fe Error gave the Falcons the 1-0 lead.
The Saints immediately answered, tying the game in the bottom of the first on a over throw by DSC, scoring Torres.
Gia Tomossone broke the tie in the third with her ninth HR of the season, a two shot to right field. Alaysia Miller drove in the Saints fourth run with an RBI single in the fifth.
The Falcons managed one run in the sixth, but got no closer as Lazar shut the door for her 28th win of the year, increasing her career victories to 54, a Santa Fe record.
Tomossone finished game two 1-for-3 with a HR and two RBI, Alaysia Miller was 1-for-3 with an RBI and Jaimee Vega and Bionca Torres were also 1-for-3.
Santa Fe has a one game lead over Florida State College at Jacksonville in the Mid-Florida Conference with four games to play. SF travels to Ocala on Saturday to face off against the College of Central Florida at 1:00 PM.
