SAINTS FALL TO ST. JOHN'S 8-7 TO END 11 GAME WINNING STREAK

Box Score

Gainesville, FL – St. John's River State College (24-21, 12-8 MFC) came to Gainesville needing a win to stay in second place in the Mid-Florida Conference and they did just that, defeating the FCSAA#1/NJCAA #3 Saints 8-7. The win keeps SJRSC in sole possession of second place and a spot in the FCSAA State Tournament.

Santa Fe (33-7-1, 16-4 MFC) will have to wait one more day to try and wrap up their third straight Mid-Florida Conference title.

The Vikings scored once in the first to take the early lead but SF answered in the bottom half of the inning with a run on a bases loaded walk. The Saints took the lead in the second on an RBI double by Jake Huxtable, scoring Trey Griffin who had doubled to begin the frame.

A costly error doomed the Saints in the third as a dropped infield pop-up lead preceded a St. john's two run homer, putting the Vikings on top 3-2.

Down 4-2 in the fourth, Garrett Greenwell and Trey Griffin smashed back to back homeruns to lead off the inning and tie the game at 4-4.

In the fifth inning, St. John's threatened to score but Jay Laurienzo made a full extension diving catch in left field to strand to Viking batters and keep the game knotted at 4-4.

Santa Fe broke the tie in the seventh when Greenwell came through once again, this time singling up the middle with two outs to score the go ahead run.

SJRSC exploded for four runs in the eighth to go up 8-5. SF pushed two across in the bottom of the eighth before the Vikings could record an out, but couldn't get the tying run across.

In the bottom of the ninth Austin Lawrence singled to right with two outs and advanced to second on a wild pitch to put the tying run in scoring position. Jake Huxtable worked a full count but struck out to end the game, leaving SF just short.

Ben O'Shea started the game on the mound and pitched five inning, striking out six. Chris Lee took the loss for Santa Fe.

Jake Huxtable led Santa Fe at the plate, going 3-for-5 with two doubles and two RBI, Austin Lawrence was 3-for-5 with two runs scored, Garrett Greenwell finished 2-for-5 with a homerun and two RBI and Trey Griffin was 2-for-3 with a homerun, double and an RBI.

The Saints will travel to Seminole State College on Saturday, April 16 to face off against the Raiders at 1:00 PM. With a win, SF will clinch their third straight MFC title and a number one seed in the FCSAA State Tournament.
