Chin Up!

April 14, 2011

The SF Welding Program recently partnered with the local U.S. Marine Corps recruitment office to build a standard chin-up bar.

Staff Sgt. Philip Thornton, who has had a Military Occupational Specialty of "1316, Metal Worker" (MOS 1316), approached the Welding Program with the project. The local recruiting office's existing bar was stolen when it was left outside the building during office remodeling.

Through his MOS 1316 skills, Thornton executed all of the activities required for the project from the acquisition of the necessary material (Boone Welding) through the design and fabrication of the structure. The Welding Program provided the access to the cutting and welding equipment needed for the project.

"We were happy to help our local Marine recruiters," said Welding Professor JT Mahoney. "The Marines are there when we need them and we wanted to be here when they had a need. Staff Sergeant Thornton has become part of the Santa Fe Welding Program family. He obviously feels at home in this environment and his frequent visits to our lab are always welcomed."
