SAINTS DEFEAT DAYTONA 8-1, SET SINGLE SEASON WINS RECORD
Box Score
Gainesville, FL – Malcolm Clapsaddle continued his hot streak on Friday afternoon against Daytona State College, leading the NJCAA #5/FCSAA #1 Saints (32-6-1, 15-3 MFC) to their 32nd win of the season and his tenth. The 32 wins sets a new Santa Fe regular season record and Clapsaddles 10 wins ties him with Ernie Milian (1985) for most single season wins by a SF pitcher.
"Malcolm really set the tone for us again", said SF coach Johnny Wiggs. We didn't score much early but he continued to put up zeros until we got the bats going. We had one of our typical big innings in the eighth that really opened it up for us."
Both starting pitchers cruised through the first three innings before Daytona scored one unearned run off Clapsaddle (10-1, 1.14 ERA) in the top of the fourth. Santa Fe answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the fourth on back to back doubles by Drew Doty and Andrew Grifol.
The Saints took the lead in the fifth on RBI singles by Austin Lawrence and Drew Doty giving Clapsaddle all the support he needed.
In the eighth Tim Remes and Garrett Greenwell singled home runs and Jay Laurienzo delivered a towering pinch hit, three run homerun over the scoreboard in left field to put an exclamation point on the Saints victory.
Left handed pitcher Chris Lee closed out the ninth inning in dominating fashion, striking out two.
The win is the tenth in a row for Santa Fe and 15th in their last 16 games.
"I'm very proud of our guys, it's not very often that you have this kind of great run, winning ten in a row and 15 out of 16, especially in MFC play," said Wiggs. "It takes great consistency from your players and that's exactly what we have gotten."
Clapsaddle struck out 10 Falcon batters in seven innings work with just five hits allowed and no walks. He has 89 strikeouts on the season and is now just four K's away from breaking Bobby Bolling's single season strikeout record of 92.
Drew Doty led the offense, going 3-for-4 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored, Austin Lawrence was 2-for-4 with an RBI, Andrew Grifol finished 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI and Garrett Greenwell was 2-for-4 with an RBI.
The Saints return to action on Monday, April 11 at home against Florida State College at Jacksonville at 3:00 PM.
