HUXTABLE'S BIG BLAST LEADS SAINTS PAST CCF, 5-3
Box Score
Gainesville, FL – Sophomore second baseman Jake Huxtable came up with the biggest hit of the day for the NJCAA #5/FCSAA #1Saints (31-6-1, 14-3 MFC) on Wednesday afternoon against College of Central Florida, roping a two out three run homerun down the left field line in the sixth inning to turn a one run SF lead into a 5-1 advantage and eventual win.
The victory is the ninth in a row for SF and 14th in their last 15 games, their last loss coming on March 18. The win ties the 2011 Saints with the 1988 team for most regular season wins in Santa Fe history with 31.
Ben O'Shea (8-2, 3.10 ERA) turned in his second straight quality outing, surrendering just one run over six innings to go with eight strikeouts. He now has 81 strikeouts in 52.1 innings pitched.
The Santa Fe offense got off to a slow start in the first two innings, but managed to push a run across in the third on a sacrifice fly by Drew Doty, scoring TJ Spina.
SF added a second run in the fourth inning to make the score 2-0. Garrett Greenwell started the frame with a double and two batters later Spina singled him home.
CCF scored their first run of the game in the sixth, but Huxtable answered for the Saints, sending a line drive three run homerun over the left field fence to make it 5-1.
Alec Asher relieved O'Shea on the mound in the seventh and gave up two unearned runs, working through back to back fielding errors in the eighth. He pitched a hitless ninth for his first save of the season.
The Saints managed seven hits on the day and surrendered just six. Huxtable finished 2-for-5 with a homerun and three RBI and TJ Spina was 2-for-2 with an RBI and two runs scored.
Santa Fe hosts Daytona State College on Friday, April 8 at 3:00 PM in a crucial MFC match-up. The Falcons have won both previous meetings between the two teams this season.
