DOTY'S NINTH INNING HOMERUN PROPELS SAINTS TO 5-4 VICTORY
Jacksonville, FL – Drew Doty broke a 4-4 tie with his fifth homerun of the season on Monday afternoon in the top of the ninth inning against Florida State College at Jacksonville to give the Saints a 5-4 win over the Stars. The victory puts SF 1.5 games ahead of St. John's River (20-17, 8-4 MFC) in the race for the Mid-Florida Conference title.
Santa Fe (27-6-1, 10-3 MFC) endured numerous rain delays in route to their tenth MFC win of the season. Jarrod Carlton started on the mound and pitched effectively, surrendering four runs (two earned) in 6.1 innings of work with six strikeouts. Kyle Rowe (4-1) relieved him and worked 2.2 innings in shutout relief, working through three walks and three hit by pitches.
Santa Fe scored first, tallying two runs in the first inning on a two run homerun by Jake Huxtable. FSC-J answered with one in the bottom of the first but Huxtable struck again in the second, putting SF up 3-1 on an RBI single.
The Stars tied the game in the bottom of the second inning and the Saints retook the lead in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Trey Griffin to put them up 4-3.
FSC-J again tied the game, this time on a solo homerun in the seventh inning, setting up the heroics by Doty in the ninth.
Huxtable led the SF offense going 3-for-4 with a homerun and three RBI, Cory Elasik was 3-for-5 and Zach Taylor finished 2-for-4. The Saints had 12 hits on the day.
Santa Fe travels to Pataka on Friday, April 1 to take on St. John's River State College in a game scheduled to begin at 6:00 PM. They return home on Saturday to face Seminole State College at 1:00 PM.
