LAZAR FANS 17 IN SWEEP OF CENTRAL FLORIDA, 7-1 AND 4-0, MOVES WITHIN SIX STRIKEOUTS OF 500
Gainesville, FL – Santa Fe sophomore Colena Lazar pitched both games of a double header against College of Central Florida on Saturday afternoon, fanning 17 in 14 innings of work to pick up two MFC wins for the Saints.
Lazar now has 494 career strikeouts, first all-time in SF history, improving on her record and further distancing herself from the previous mark of 432 set by Rachel Foster in 2005-06. She also set the record for shutouts in a career with 21, eclipsing Amy Johnson's record of 20 set in 2004-05.
The SF offense provided plenty of support outscoring the Patriots 11-1 on the day. The Saints (29-8, 10-2 MFC) scored two in the first inning of game one on four CCF walks and a pass ball, giving Lazar all the runs she needed.
They added two more in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Gia Tomossone and the other on a Patriots overthrow. SF tacked on three more insurance runs in the fifth for the winning 7-1 margin.
Jasmine Warren finished game one 2-for-3 with a stolen base and two runs scored and Bianca Torres was 2-for-2.
Tomossone blasted a solo homerun in the fourth inning of game two to break the ice for Santa Fe. Colena Lazar collected an RBI later in the inning on a bases loaded walk and Jasmine Warren put the exclamation point on the win with a two out, two RBI single to center field.
Tomossone finished 2-for-3 with a homerun, Erika Garcia was 2-for-3 and Ashley Holton finished 2-for-3.
Lazar gave up only two hits in game two and struck out 11 to improve to 20-5 on the season with 213 strikeouts in 155.2 innings. She has 46 career wins, four shy of Katelyn Murphree's SF career record of 50.
The Saints travel to St. Petersburg College on Thursday for a non-conference game against the Titans at 4:00 PM.
