#1 SAINTS DROP MFC OPENER TO DAYTONA, 8-5
Daytona, FL – The NJCAA #1 Santa Fe Saints (17-4-1, 0-1 MFC), who recently jumped to #1 in the NJCAA national poll (full rankings) fell in their Mid-Florida Conference opener at Daytona State (12-6, 1-0 MFC) on Wednesday afternoon, 8-5.
All five Santa Fe runs came on homeruns. TJ Spina (3) connected on a two run homer in the third and Andrew Grifol (5) hit a three run blast in the eighth.
Malcolm Clapsaddle (4-1) started on the hill and pitched 3.2 innings, surrendering four unearned runs on four hits with four strikeouts to suffer his first loss of the year. Jarrod Carlton came out of the bullpen and gave up four runs in two innings and Ryan Yarbrough pitched 2.1 perfect innings to finish out the game.
"Ryan did a nice job in his two plus innings," said SF coach Johnny Wiggs. "He kept us in the game and gave us a chance at the end."
Santa Fe finished with seven hits on the day. Drew Doty was 2-for-4 and TJ Spina was 2-for-3 with a homerun and two RBI. Grifol's three RBI give him 32, the most in the NJCAA.
The Saints will get another shot at the Falcons on Friday, March 4 when Daytona makes the trip to Gainesville for a 3:00 PM game.
