SAINTS RALLY FALLS SHORT IN LOSS TO GULF COAST, 11-8
Gainesville, FL – The Saints (9-2-1) rallied from six down in the eighth to tie the game but came up just short against the Gulf Coast CC Commodores on Sunday afternoon, falling 11-8. The loss is the first for NJCAA #23/FCCAA #3 Santa Fe since January 29.
Both teams scored two runs in second inning with the Saints runs coming on a Trey Griffin RBI single and an RBI double by Austin Lawrence.
GCCC broke through for six runs in the fourth, all unearned off of SF starter Chris Lee. The inning included three hits, one hit by pitch and three infield errors.
Santa Fe pitchers Ryan Yarbrough (pictured) and Kentrail Pierce combined to shut out the Commodores over the next 4.1 innings, keeping SF in the game.
In the eighth, the Saints finally got something going, stringing together seven hits and six runs to tie the game at 8-8. Tim Remes (4) landed the first blow with a three run homer off the scoreboard. Griffen and Lawrence followed with single and TJ Spina walked to load the bases. Coach Johnny Wiggs called on Cory Elasik to pinch hit and he delivered a two run single. Jay Laurienzo stepped to the plate for the second time in the inning and collected his second hit in as many at bats, tying the score.
Kyle Rowe (1-1) entered the game in the ninth for the Saints and surrendered three runs to the Commodore batters.
SF gave themselves a chance in the bottom of the ninth, loading the bases with one out but failed to capitalize.
Austin Lawrence finished the day 3-for-4 with an RBI, Tim Remes was 2-for-4 with his fourth homerun of the season and three RBI, Trey Griffin was 2-for-4 with an RBI, Andrew Grifol was 2-for-4 and Jay Laurienzo also finished 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Santa Fe takes to the field again tomorrow, February 14 for their fourth game in three days when they battle Hillsborough CC at 3:00 PM.
