SAINTS PLAY WELL DESPITE DROPPING TWO OF THREE
Bradenton, FL – The NJCAA #10 Santa Fe Saints (3-3) dropped two of three on Saturday at the State College of Florida Round Robin, but Coach Chris Ahern says SF played better than the record indicates.
“Although we finished 1-2, there was a lot of quality softball played by our team,” said Ahern. “It's just a matter of getting to keep playing. We haven't played in two weeks due to weather and getting regular games and practice in will make a big difference moving forward.”
The Saints dropped game one to host SCF, 2-1 despite outhitting the Manatees six to four. Colena Lazar took the loss but surrendered only two hits. SF jumped out to the early 1-0 lead in the first and held on until SCF pushed two across in the fifth.
Jasmine Warren picked up the win in game two, combining with Erika Garcia on a 3-0 shutout of Palm Beach State College. Warren also knocked in a run to help her own cause. Ashley Curry and Jaimee Vega had the other RBI and Garcia and Gia Tomossone each had doubles.
In game three the Saints faced off against the defending National Champion and NJCAA #1 Miami Dade College Sharks. Colena Lazar again took the circle and held the Sharks in check most of the game. A late sixth inning run broke a 1-1 tie and gave MDC a 2-1 win.
Santa Fe outhit all three teams on the day, committed only one error and gave up only four runs in 21 innings.
Catcher Ashley Curry (pictured) made her mark at the plate, going 6-for-9, accounting for a third of the Saints 18 hits.
“It was amazing to see our level of intensity, enthusiasm and quality of play escalate throughout the day, including against the defending national champions,” said Ahern. “We are looking forward to the team building on their play today and keeping their stride toward peaking at the right time.”
SF plays their home opening double header on Tuesday, February 15 against Tallahassee CC at 2:00 PM and also plays on Thursday, February 17 at home against St. Petersburg College starting at 2:00 PM.
