SF WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
DAYTONA DEFEATS SANTA FE, 75-69
Gainesville, FL – The third time was a charm for the Daytona State Falcons on Saturday afternoon as they defeated the Santa Fe Saints 75-69. The Saints had won the previous two meetings this season, both in Daytona. The two teams now sit atop the MFC standings and share an identical 7-2 record. SF holds the tiebreaker because of their two head to head wins.
Daytona jumped out to an early lead and took a 37-29 lead into the break. The Saints were hurt by turnover and missed baskets.
“We didn't take care of the ball in the first half,” said SF coach Chanda Stebbins. “We turned it over too often and missed too many easy baskets that allowed them to get a big lead.”
The Falcons continued to apply pressure in the second period and led by as many as 17. The Saints (15-11, 7-2 MFC) didn't give in and came storming back, led by 16 points from Kindsay Brandt, to cut the lead to 67-65 with 2:31 to go in the game. That's as close as SF would get as the Falcons answered with back to back buckets and made free throws down the stretch to hold on for the win.
A big difference in the game came at the free throw line where the Saints had 16 more attempts than DSC, but make only three more.
“We have to do a better job from the free throw line,” said Stebbins. “There is no excuse for missing as many as we did.”
Jasmine Blakemore and Kindsay Brandt led the offense with 16 points each and Demisha Mills also scored in double figures with 10. Stephenie Coney pitched in eight assists.
“Jasmine did a great job tonight and Kindsay really picked us up in the second half with her 16 points,” said Stebbins.
The Saints host the College of Central Florida on Wednesday, February 9 at 6:00 pm. The game will be aired live on www.psblive.com.
