SAINTS OPEN SEASON WITH WIN OVER HILLSBOROUGH CC, 7-2
Tampa, FL – The NJCAA nationally ranked #23 Santa Fe Saints (1-0) started the 2011 season off on the right foot Friday evening by defeating the Hillsborough CC "Hawks" in Tampa 7-2.
Shortstop TJ Spina picked up right where he left off after his stellar freshman season last year by going 3-for-5 with a double and three RBI. Sophomore second baseman Austin Lawrence also had a big game with a 2-for-4 effort, including a double and an RBI.
The Saints jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first on a Hawk error, scoring Lawrence who was trying to take third on a double steal. In the second inning SF piled it on, pushing four runs across on four hits including RBI from Lawrence, Spina and OF Drew Doty. OF Jay Laurienzo also doubled in the inning.
Spina capped the scoring in the ninth when he laced a double to score the final run of the game.
Malcolm Clapsaddle (1-0) picked up the win by pitching four scoreless innings that included five strikeouts. Jarod Carlton also pitched four innings, surrendering two runs on six hits with three strikeouts. Brendan O'Rourke finished the game off with a perfect ninth inning.
Santa Fe plays their home opener tomorrow, January 29 against South Georgia College in a double header scheduled to start at 12:00 pm. LHP Ben O'Shea will start game one on the mound and LHP Chris Lee will take the ball in game two.
